Sourcing from Yiwu without flying: channels, checks and cost structure

A large share of Yiwu's export trade is done remotely through platforms and agents. This page sets out the three channel types, the checks that work over video, and the fee models to expect before you commit an order.

Three channels

The market operator runs Chinagoods, its official trading platform, which lists market suppliers and is the only channel tied directly to the market system. Around it sit sourcing agents (independent brokers, some resident in Yiwu for years) and direct booth contact, where you deal with a stall owner you found through a market floor or a fair.

The channels are not exclusive: a common pattern is platform discovery, agent handling, independent inspection at the end.

What you can verify remotely

The checks that survive distance: match the business licence to the contract party; require a live video walk of the booth or workshop with a date slate visible rather than forwarded photos; place a small paid sample order before any volume commitment; and book a third-party sampling inspection before shipment (our inspection guide covers the standard).

Trade lawyers who handle fraud cases point to the same early signals across disputes: reused photos, inconsistent company details across platforms, refusal to do a video call, and guarantees that are too clean. Treat any two of those as a stop signal.

How agents charge

Three models dominate: a commission on order value, a markup embedded in the quoted unit price, and per-service fees (sourcing days, inspection, consolidation). Each shifts risk differently: a markup rewards volume quality, a commission rewards order size, per-service fees are the most transparent and the least common.

Whichever model applies, ask for written disclosure of who pays the agent. An agent paid by the seller is a sales channel, not your representative, and the advice will follow the money.

Getting goods out without visiting

Remote orders exit the same way on-site orders do: consolidated at a market-area warehouse, then by road to Ningbo-Zhoushan port for sea freight, or by the Yixinou rail service, which links Yiwu to European destinations and suits rail-freight buyers better than air or sea on mid-value cargo. Consolidation mechanics are set out on our consolidation page.

When to fly instead: a first relationship above your pain threshold, orders where tooling or licensing matters, or the fair calendar. The Yiwu Fair (Yiwu International Commodities Fair) is the annual anchor event and doubles as the one window when every booth is staffed for export.

Fee models described are market practice reported by agencies and brokers, not verified quotes from any named provider. Confirm current fees in writing before committing an order.
