Yiwu International Trade City District 1 vs attending the Yiwu Fair
The fair concentrates a year of selling into a short window; District 1 spreads the same trades across a full year of booths. Which one deserves your trip depends on what stage your buying is at.
Yiwu markets: Yiwu International Trade City District 1
Two formats, one city
The Yiwu International Commodities Fair is an annual exhibition: a fixed window each year when suppliers take stands and buyers visit in bulk. District 1 is a year-round wholesale building, opened in 2002, holding more than 10,000 booths of flowers, toys, hair accessories, jewellery and crafts.
The formats differ in what they are good at. A fair compresses discovery; a permanent market compresses reordering. Neither replaces the other, and most experienced buyers use both in sequence.
Category depth
At the fair, a category gets one stand per supplier and a few sample shelves. In District 1, the same toy or jewellery category occupies a whole floor, with neighbours selling near-identical ranges, so comparison is a matter of walking an aisle rather than crossing a hall.
The market also holds depth the fair cannot: floor 4's direct-sales centre for small and medium manufacturers, and an export orientation the operator puts at over 60 per cent of trade, with goods reaching more than 140 countries and regions. For these categories, the permanent market is where the range lives.
How the buying method differs
Fair buying is sampling and lead capture: collect contacts, quote later, ship later. Market buying is transaction on the floor: agree quantity bands and packaging in the booth, gather goods through a collection point, and consolidate into one load.
That difference changes the skills you need. At the fair, discipline is note-taking and follow-up speed. In the district, discipline is specification in writing, per-booth labelling and the pricing method described in our district pricing guide.
Which one fits you
Come to the fair if you are starting from zero and want to meet many suppliers in a short window, or if your product is new and you need breadth before depth. Come to District 1 if you know your categories and want to compare, negotiate and ship on a normal working day.
The strongest pattern pairs them: discover at the fair, then return to the market in a quieter month to fix terms with the suppliers who made the shortlist. Our city guide to Yiwu maps both into one itinerary.
The comparison is qualitative. Fair dates, stand numbers and attendance figures are not stated here; check the organiser's current information before planning.
